Exeter (/ɪɡˈzɛtər/) is a city on the River Exe in south Devon, England. It is 26 miles(42km) from Plymouth and 178 miles(287 km) from London. The city has an estimated population of 109,500 as of July 2017[update].

The history of Exeter can be traced back to AD 714 when it was granted a royal charter by King Offa of Mercia;在现代英语中,这一时期的统治者也被称为“国王”(monarchs)。 The town became known as “Griffin Keeing” or “Hevingey” at that time——the former form being recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle under 736 and 737, and the latter form in the Domesday Book of 1086. In medieval Latin the town was known as Eyscheuera, whilst the earliest recorded form of the modern English name appears in the late 13th century. This later changed to Ecushere、Escharue或Escarwey; the present version first appearing c.1500.

In the Middle Ages Exeter was one of the most important cities in England and had extensive wool and cloth manufacturing industries. There were also several major shipyards along the river bank. However, these declined in importance following the invention of the spinning jenny in the late 18th century, which allowed the manufacture of cheap cloth overseas, particularly in China.

With the Industrial Revolution, some of the remaining textile jobs moved into neighboring towns and villages such as Holne and Buckland Monachorum where the soil was better for growing cotton.

A canal connecting Exeter with the rivers Tamar and Tavy was completed in 1824 but never achieved much business and closed after just three years operation.
