长寿菊因什么待名？
“寿客”，即我们今天所说的“长寿花”（Marigold）是英国人在16世纪给万寿菊起的名字；而“carnation”一词在英语中是“玫瑰”的意思。用“Carnation”称呼万寿菊，是因为它像玫瑰一样多刺。 这名字传到美国后，被赋予了一个新意思：任何颜色或花纹的丝巾都是“carnations”. 在美国说“The Carnation is my favorite flower." 就等于说 “My favorite color is pink.”或者“My favorite dress is blue.” 这种用法直到近几十年仍然很常见。所以，如果你看到一本书里说“…the carnations were all in bloom...”不要惊奇，作者可能只是想表达“the flowers were all in bloom…”而已！
“Carnation”这个字在英国人的笔下变成了“car-na-tion”，然后传回美国后又变得“can-a-tion”，接着再返回英国后变成了“ca-na-tion”……于是乎“a can of petrol”=“a ca-na-tion of pet-ro-leum”…就这样循环了500年到现在都没停下！ 至于为什么英国人老是把“n”和“a”搞混……那当然是因为英语本来就把“an”发成“a”嘛！
